Access to Justice Project: Legal Barriers and Health Impacts in Black Communities of New Brunswick

The Atlantic Equity and Research Alliance (AEARA) is proud to present the Access to Justice Project: A Policy Report on Legal Barriers and Health Impacts in Black Communities of New Brunswick. Based on a community-driven survey of 359 Black residents across the province, this report provides the first comprehensive evidence on how unresolved legal issues affect the health, wellbeing, and social outcomes of Black communities in New Brunswick.

The findings reveal significant challenges: 89% of participants reported mental health impacts linked to legal problems, 38% abandoned legal issues without resolution, 68% identified cost as the primary barrier to accessing legal support, and 82% were unaware of simplified court processes designed to improve access to justice. The report examines barriers related to housing, employment, immigration, and family law while proposing practical policy solutions that advance equity, community wellbeing, and systemic change.

This publication offers actionable recommendations for governments, legal institutions, health agencies, funders, and community organizations seeking to strengthen access to justice and improve outcomes for Black communities.
