Building a Compassionate Community: Trauma-Informed Training
As part of the Restorative Narratives Project: Black Victim-Survivors, the Atlantic Equity and Research Alliance (AEARA) successfully delivered a series of Trauma-Informed Training workshops. The training brought together community members, service providers, peer navigators, and emerging leaders to strengthen their understanding of trauma and develop practical skills for creating safer, more compassionate, and healing-centered spaces. Through these sessions, participants gained valuable tools to support individuals affected by trauma while contributing to stronger, more resilient communities.
Held at AEARA’s office at 599 King George Highway, Suite 202, the training explored the foundations of trauma, its impact on individuals and communities, and practical approaches for responding with empathy, dignity, and understanding. Participants gained tools to recognize trauma-informed principles in everyday interactions, workplaces, and community settings.
The workshops delivered in English and French emphasized that trauma-informed practice is not limited to healthcare or counselling professions. Rather, it is a mindset that helps individuals, organizations, and communities foster trust, reduce harm, and promote healing.
The training certified 20 participants, contributing to a growing movement toward equity-centered and trauma-aware communities in New Brunswick.
Participant Reflections
“This training is both insightful and meaningful. One thing that stood out for me is that the facilitators made the sessions engaging. I learned that every person may carry unseen experiences, and those experiences shape their emotions, reactions, behaviours, and responses. This training helped me understand the importance of meeting people where they are and responding with empathy.”
“I am glad I attended this training because it helped me understand many of my past traumas and answered questions I have carried for a long time. It will also help me better support my clients and members of my community, making them feel heard, understood, and validated.”
Looking Forward
The success of the Trauma-Informed Training series highlights the growing need for community-based learning opportunities that promote healing, resilience, and inclusion. AEARA remains committed to equipping individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to support people affected by trauma while building stronger, more compassionate communities across New Brunswick and beyond.
Through initiatives like these, AEARA continues to advance its vision of communities where everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and supported on their journey toward healing and well-being.
